Environmental Sampling Research Module

NSF has funded development of the Environmental Sampling Research Module project. Seven institutions from across the United States are participating in the project.

Multi-Institutional Undergraduate Research for Multidisciplinary Environmental Benefits

This is an NSF funded project for implementing the curriculum for the Environmental Sampling Research Module (ESRM). We engage students in inquiry-based research experiences at numerous institutions. Students are mining the existing research database as well as adding data from ongoing research to conduct a variety of interdisciplinary learning activities. Outcomes include interdisciplinary inquiry-based learning activities, an expanded database of the location and distribution pesticide activity, and newly discovered bacterial strains.

The research is valuable in itself. The students have found bacteria that degrade toxins, hydrocarbons and antibiotics, and that could be potential solutions to cleaning up toxic waste, for enhanced oil recovery and remediation. This has applications in health, energy and the environment.
